WINNER OF THE 2016 BLUE SKETCH PRESS PRIZE
Cheryl Maddalena confronts the stereotypes of home life and leaves us reeling on the other side. In CHILDREN, IT IS TIME WE HAD THE TALK, the domestic is turned on its head, reimagined and deconstructed. Her explorations are many—sometimes charming, sometimes grotesque, sometimes ghoulishly sexy. Often all at once.
Maddelena’s poetry is something you’ve never heard or read before – incisive, uncomfortable, biting, and beautiful. Cheryl Maddelena is an iconoclast of the first class, one of the most influential poets in the poetry slam movement, and perhaps its most original voice.
Cheryl Maddalena is a poet, mom, engineer, and psychologist… but not all at the same time. Sometime slammaster of Boise, she has reached National Poetry Slam, Individual World Poetry Slam, Group Piece, and Women of the World Poetry Slam Finals stages as a competitor, backup dancer, emcee, and opening act. She
has also made top four at the NUPIC underground indies, been featured as part of the Slam Legends Showcase, and has been Haiku Deathmatch Champion. She’s been published in PANK and Los Angeles Review of Books as well as peer-reviewed journals for her research on the healing e ects of writing.
In real life—as a psychologist, mother, wife, friend, mentor, and freelance evangelist—Cheryl spends her time encouraging people to nd their real best self and to stick by that person, no matter what.
